Super Smash Bros., known in Japan as Nintendo All-Star! Dairantō Smash Brothers, Nintendō Ōrusutā! Dairantō Sumasshu Burazāzu?, Dairantō meaning "Great Fray"), is a crossover fighting video game developed by HAL Laboratory, Inc. and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo 64 console. It was first released in Japan on January 21, 1999, and releases on April 27, 1999 in North America and November 19, 1999 in Europe followed.
Players are able to choose from up to twelve characters (four of whom need to be unlocked) from various games in Nintendo's history, such as Mario, Link, Pikachu, and Kirby. In all the Smash Bros. titles, the characters appear to be toys or trophy figures representing Nintendo characters brought to life for the purpose of combat.
Super Smash Bros. is the first game in the Super Smash Bros. series. It was followed by the very successful Super Smash Bros. Melee for the Nintendo GameCube and the upcoming Super Smash Bros. Brawl for Wii.
The Sonic the Hedgehog series is a franchise of video games released by Sega starring and named after its mascot character Sonic the Hedgehog. The series began in 1991 with the release of Sonic the Hedgehog on the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis, in addition to an 8-bit version of the game for the Master System and Game Gear formats. Sonic was responsible for turning Sega into a leading video game company during the 16-bit era, and his first game soon replaced Altered Beast as the default pack-in game for the Mega Drive in North America and Europe. As of March 2007, the franchise has sold more than 45 million games copies.
